Gas Stoves

Shop
Baltimore Used Appliances has a selection of new and used gas stoves. Gas stoves generally have a range or cooktop and an oven. Normally the oven is gas and but sometimes the oven is electric and that combination is called a dual fuel stove. Some people feel that you get more control with gas for a stovetop but for an oven, electric is better.

Pros of Gas Stoves

  • It has been shown that gas stoves are less expensive to run than electric stoves, ranging (bad pun) from 10 to 30 per cent.
  • As soon as you turn on a gas stove it is at temperature.
  • According to the experts, food cooks faster and more evenly with a gas flame but if the temperature is the same, we are not sure why this one would be true.
  • A gas stove allows you to toast food or char it which is difficult to do with electric.
  • You can fine tune the heat better with gas cooktops since electric normally has a limited number of heat settings.
  • They can still work when the power goes out. The electric ignition won’t work, but use a match.

Cons of Gas Stoves

  • There is a higher chance of a fire because of the open flame and a gas leak can cause problems.
  • Some feel that gas stoves are harder to clean.
  • Gas ovens can be more difficult to do baking due to gas giving off moisture and the heat isn’t as evenly distributed, with it being hotter at the top.
  • Despite gas stoves generally being less expensive to operate, they are usually more expensive to purchase and can be more expensive to install.
  • Because the heat is so adjustable on the range, it is harder to get the same heat every time.
  • Electric heating elements can usually get to a higher temperature.

Tip for using a gas range: Many people use the wrong size burner for a pot or pan. If the burner is too large, most of the heat is on the outside edges of the pot and it doesn’t heat well. Bigger isn’t better. Use a burner where the flame will be completely on bottom of the pan, so much smaller than diameter of the pan.

Gas Stove Options

At the lower end, gas stoves have stovetops with 4 burners. More premium models have 5 or 6 burners. You can also get removable stove top griddle. The oven at the lower end has two racks. More premium models have larger ovens with 3 racks or two ovens. There is frequently a storage drawer below the oven. Self-cleaning ovens are another option. Colors are usually stainless steel, black or white. Higher end models frequently have a convection oven feature for faster cooking. Also, they will have hidden heating elements which makes cleaning much easier.
